We list off the top five Queenstown experiences you have to try at least once.
Jet across Shotover River
Easily one of the most popular experiences in Queenstown, the Shotover Jet Boat ride is a boating experience like no other. These high-performance jet boats are fast and agile, able to turn on a dime and spin 360 degrees effortlessly.
Shotover Canyon is just 10 minutes from Queenstown and provides the perfect aquatic playground for a boating thrill-ride. Hold your breath as you jet through narrow canyons, skim rock walls with inches to spare and roar around the river bends. Hold on tight and be prepared to get slightly wet as your boat driver puts your vessel through its paces.
Choose from a myriad ski slopes
Queenstown enjoys one of the longest ski seasons in the Southern Hemisphere, providing ideal conditions from June through to October. Choose from four commercial resorts with slopes suitable to those of all skill levels.
Coronet Peak is Queenstown’s closet ski field and promises picturesque views across Lake Wakatipu and Lake Hayes. The Remarkables is a family-friendly ski area offering excellent facilities and plenty of slopes for first-timers. Cardrona Alpine Resort is well known for having the most extensive terrain park facilities in the Southern Hemisphere, including two half pipes and a gravity cross course. Lastly, Treble Cone offers up some of the best free riding in New Zealand, with lengthy uncrowded slopes and a free dedicated lift.
Take the gondola up and luge down (almost)
Wrap up your stay in Queenstown with a ride up the Skyline Gondola to Bob’s Peak to find unmatched views of the city and great lake. While on top of the world, hop in one of the little plastic buggies available and luge down (part) of the hillside. Unfortunately, the buggies won’t take you all the way down to the mountain base itself, but the luge is still an excellent experience all the same.
The above is just a sample of what the dynamic city of Queenstown has to offer. Experience it yourself to discover the rest of its untapped potential.
Leap into a canyon
You can thank New Zealander A.J. Hackett for inventing commercial bungy jumping. While there are plenty of locations to hurl yourself off platforms into the great abyss, Nevis Valley is one of the most popular spots. For one, it’s home to the world’s biggest rope swing. Secondly, it’s 134-meter bungy platform is the third highest in the world. It’s just one measly step forward, after all. Who’s ready to take the leap?
Throw yourself out of a plane
Why jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane 15,000ft above the ground? Because it’s a one of a kind experience and guaranteed to leave a lasting impression. So if you have the courage, look at booking a brief flight with NZONE Skydive before plummeting back to earth in a fraction of the time.
There’s no other way to view the stunning New Zealand countryside and if you can concentrate on anything as you ascend, you’ll be rewarded with unmatched views of the surrounding great lakes and mountain ranges.
You only live once.
