Another out of this world experience 2 hours’ drive from Auckland is one of the most sought after attractions New Zealand has to offer. Fans of the Lord of the Rings franchise will be in their own version of heaven as they get to explore where the movies were made for themselves. As you can imagine, there are plenty of day tours operating throughout the area, offering differing experiences from simple tours of the Shire to tours with meals.
45 minutes west of Auckland city, you’ll find a pristine beach known for its black sand and incredible surf. Whether you want to catch a wave, take in the gorgeous sprawling views or enjoy one of the many walks in the surrounding forest, a trip to Piha Beach is sure to be a highlight.
How many people can say they’ve walked on a volcano? If you haven’t yet, here’s your chance. Less than 30 minutes from the Auckland city centre is a lush island ready for you to explore. Rising from the sea over 600 years ago, Rangitoto Island gives explorers the chance to walk to its crater. To get to Rangitoto you have two options, for a relaxed trip book a ticket on the ferry, or, to get your blood pumping early, travel in by kayak.
Once you get to the island, you’ll want to complete the walk to the summit of the volcano. Taking approximately 2 hours return, you’ll walk through lava fields and the largest pōhutukawa forest in the world. At the summit, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views that are well worth the walk. If you’re thinking of heading there to check it out for yourself, make sure you think ahead and bring food and water as there are none available on the island.
Jump in your car and enjoy a 2 and a half-hour drive from Auckland on a quest to discover the magic that’s hidden deep within New Zealand’s caves. Waitomo Caves awakens the explorer in all of us as visitors enter on foot before boarding a small boat to sail into the darkness.
This section of the experience is completely silent and you won’t see a thing. Your other senses will be heightened, and right before you start to panic, thinking you’ve entered a never-ending hole, the magic happens. The caves twinkle to life for a light show you will never forget. Countless glow worms cover the ceiling, resembling a starry night sky as you bob along the water and experience the wonder together.
