Auckland also provides an excellent base camp for tourists due to its close proximity to so many fun and scenic attractions. The compact city centre is only half an hour from a range of stunning beaches, postcard-worthy islands and more hiking trails that you’ll know what to do with. This is great news for restless tourists who can never decide how to spend their time and enjoy having multiple options available.
Here are our top destinations for your stay in Auckland.
Pay Waiheke Island a visit
It may be difficult choosing which of Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf Islands to visit, but Waiheke Island is by far the most popular destination. This is understandable once you traipse along the sugar-white sand beaches – the turquoise waters of the ocean on one side and the vibrant green of the bush on the other are simply irresistible.
Keen hikers shouldn’t miss the three-hour Church Bay Circuit trail, which highlights the best the island has to offer. WWII history buffs should also pay a visit to Stony Batter Historic Reserve to inspect the impressive underground tunnel systems carved out during the war in case the city was ever invaded.
Visit the Auckland War Memorial Museum
History lovers should also pay a visit to this imposing, yet impressive heritage building that dates back to 1929. It was originally constructed to honour the New Zealand soldiers who fought in WWI, but today heroes the country’s Polynesian heritage and explores the rich history of New Zealand and its environment.
The first floor of the museum hosts the natural history exhibits, while the top floor is solely dedicated to sharing the stories of New Zealand’s involvement in global conflict throughout history.
Gain a unique point of view from the Auckland Sky Tower
You won’t be able to miss Auckland’s needle-like Sky Tower amongst the skyline. It’s the city’s tallest building at an impressive 328 meters and affords generous views of the city and surrounding suburbia from its observation deck.
It would also appear that New Zealand’s reputation for turning everything into an adrenaline-pumping thrill ride is well deserved. Those seeking more of a rush can choose to brave the winds and walk around the exterior of the tower on its 192-meter-high Sky Walk platform. Otherwise, dial the thrills up a notch and BASE jump from the platform on a Sky Jump. It wouldn’t be a true trip to New Zealand without an adrenaline rush at least once, after all.
