5 Days in Darwin: How to Make the Most of It

Nestled into the tip of the Northern Territory is the capital city of Darwin/Garramilla. The gateway to the territory’s lush nature parks and vibrant scenery, it’s easy to explore this idyllic city and its surroundings with an Ace rental car. Follow this five-day guide to make the most of a trip to this unique corner of Australia’s north.

Day 1: Explore the City

To begin your trip in this stunning city, pick up your Ace rental car from the Darwin branch and head out to the Darwin Waterfront Precinct to start exploring the heart of the city. Day 2: Embrace Nature

For your second day in Darwin, jump in your Ace rental car and head out to Litchfield National Park. Day 3:Venture Further

Depart early on your third day in Darwin for an adventure of a lifetime in Kakadu National Park. At about a three hours’ drive from Darwin’s CBD, Kakadu is a bit further away, but well worth the trip. Head out on the Anbangbang Billabong Walk to see just some of this lush landscape that swells up and around you. Famous for its Aboriginal rock art, you can observe some of these ancient art displays at Ubirr and Burrungkuy (Nourlangie). To make the most of your visit to Kakadu, take a guided tour from one of the park’s knowledgeable guides and learn more about the cultural significance of the park and the history it holds. The Yellow Water Billabong Cruise is also another great way to take in the parkland and its waters. The cruise will take you on a discovery tour throughout the snaking waterways.

Day 4 and 5: Indulge in Relaxation

On your fourth day in Darwin, head out on a Tiwi Islands day tour and experience the rich Aboriginal culture of the Tiwi Islands. The ferry will take you to the Island town of Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island and lead you through local life with a Tiwi guide as you learn about cultural practices and the history of the area. When you arrive back in Darwin city in the evening, head to the beloved Pee Wee’s at the Point for a dinner that overlooks the water and watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand. For your final day in Darwin, take it easy with a visit to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Here, you’ll learn about Aboriginal art, culture, and history, as well as more about the city of Darwin.
