Things to do in Brisbane
Brisbane is a fantastic playground for tourists in Queensland, perfectly situated to start your Australian road trip holiday. Not only are the Sunshine and Gold Coast areas close by, but it has plenty to do on its own, too.

1. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Lone Pine is recognised as the world’s largest koala sanctuary by the Guinness Book of World Records. Over 130 koalas live here, which you can cuddle for a great photo moment.
2. Mount Coot-Tha
Fifteen minutes from central Brisbane will get you to the summit of Mount Coot-Tha, hailed as one of the best views in the city.
3. Stradbroke Island
Take a ferry across to Stradbroke Island to splash around at some of the best beaches this city has to offer, or drive to many of its nature walks and other attractions.
4. Caboolture Historical Village
Drive 45 minutes north and you’ll reach the largest tourist attraction in Caboolture and its surrounds. This fantastic place has over 70 unique buildings in addition to 110,000 antiques and other items on display.
5. Lake Apex
Bird lovers should drive just west of the city to see over 150 colourful species residing in Lake Apex Park, adjacent to the Queensland Transport Museum.
6. Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA)
QAGOMA is the ultimate art experience, holding over 16,000 different works from both the past and present. Exhibitions range from the beautiful to the downright surreal, so make sure to leave plenty of time for a good wander.
7. Moreton Bay
Moreton Bay is a huge area north of the CBD with everything you could want in an aquatic road trip holiday. Make sure to try the seafood, go whale watching and just enjoy swimming.
8. Australia Zoo
The late-Steve Irwin’s world-famous zoo is just an hour north of Brisbane, and is one of the best animal attractions in the entire country. Walk around at your own pace, or join in on an animal encounter for an in-depth look at the adorable inhabitants.
9. Workshops Rail Museum
Australia’s oldest railway workshops are still open, and the public can get hands-on here by visiting the museum. There are always numerous exhibitions on, great for both kids and adults with an interest in rail history (or touching lots of old stuff!).
10. South Bank
Visit Brisbane says South Bank, across the Brissy River from the CBD, is the city’s “premiere lifestyle and cultural destination”. Must-dos here include Sciencentre, the Wheel of Brisbane (an awesome Ferris wheel) and the country’s only inner-city beach: Streets Beach.
