10 awesome things to do in Adelaide
Adelaide is a gorgeous city, with all the charm of a European mecca, without the same busy feel. Make sure part of your Australian holiday itinerary includes a trip to the buzzing SA capital, so you can celebrate its arts, food, wine and tourism industries alongside the locals.
Here are our top 10 favourite things to do in Adelaide.
1. Cleland Wildlife Park
The animals at Cleland Wildlife Park roam free in a natural setting, but are happy to meet people for some pats and photos. You’ll see koalas, dingoes, snakes, waterbirds and more – but no cages.
2. Museums
There are plenty of museums in Adelaide for you to learn about the local history. Visit the SA Maritime Museum, the Migration Museum and also the SA Museum – the latter-most of which holds the largest collection of Aboriginal artefacts in the world.
3. Adelaide Oval tour
The 53,500-capacity Adelaide Oval stadium is a perfect blend of the city’s heritage and modern sporting facilities. Take a tour here to learn behind the scenes stories from passionate volunteer guides.
4. Haigh’s Chocolate Factory
Like a dream straight out of Willy Wonka, you can take a tour through the famous Haigh’s Chocolate Factory here in Adelaide, totally for free! Complimentary tea and chocolate tastings included.
5. Barossa Valley
Wash that down by next going on a self drive wine tour of the Barossa Valley. Check out towns such as Bethany, Angaston and Greenock, as well as all the cellar doors along the way (and designate a driver before you go).
6. Hahndorf
Thirty minutes out of Adelaide is the oldest German settlement in Australia: Hahndorf. Eateries, gift shops, ancient trees and tourist attractions abound here – it’s a day trip all on its own.
7. Beach fun
Adelaide has many excellent beaches nearby. For a distinctly art deco feel, try Brighton Beach. Further south, sand, surf and towering cliffs can be found at Sellicks Beach. In the other direction, North Haven has very safe swimming, according to SouthAustralia.com.
8. Market shopping
Adelaide Central Market is a must-browse as the city’s most-visited tourist attraction, also according to SouthAustralia.com. A bit further from the touristy bustle, Fishermen’s Wharf Market is just 30 minutes north and is a great place to pick up a curio or two, with plenty of stalls to peruse.
9. Adelaide Gaol
When construction on Adelaide Gaol began in 1840, it was considered a pretty “radical” design, states the SA government. Nowadays it’s an eerie tourist attraction, with excellent self-guided walking tours (and possibly some ghost sightings, too!).
10. Kangaroo Island
If you want a unique SA multi-day trip, drive south of Adelaide and catch a ferry to Kangaroo Island. There are numerous wildlife tours that you simply must do here, in addition to numerous other activities.

Rent The Experience: Town Painting
A rental car’s a rental car. A moving metallic shell capable of travelling at relatively high speeds from one point to another, safely harbouring people and said people’s material goods en route. It’s a means of getting from A to B, a functional requirement, a literal vehicle to something much bigger. An experience.
An experience is something that helps to define us, that inspires us, that makes us more alive, more human. It’s a breath of mountain fresh air. The feel of a wind on our face. The filtered orange glow of a breaking dawn. The pulse-racing rush of adrenaline, the quivering anticipation of a journey unknown.
An experience is something that validates our sense of who we are. It becomes weaved into the fabric of our existence. It can be brought to mind on a whim to help us escape to a better time. It lives on in us. Forever.
